London for sustainability

Discover why London is a global trendsetter for sustainability and home to a very substantial and captive audience for green sector events.

London is a world-leading city and hub for sustainable initiatives, businesses, events and innovation.

Among the city’s many achievements are becoming the world’s first ever National Park City, home to 15,000 wildlife species as well as public parks and green spaces that make up 50% of the city’s territory.

London’s venues, services and experiences have taken the city’s net zero strategy to heart and are working hard to embed sustainability across every part of the services they offer to event planners.

London's top sustainable sectors

While London is a hotspot for innovation in sustainability, some sectors stand out:

  • Green finance: 112 companies have been awarded the Green Economy Mark, which have a combined market capitalisation of £172bn.
  • Mobility: London is home to more than 103,000 electric vehicles and 96.7% of the city’s total cars meet the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) standards.
  • Foodtech: London is leading the way in low carbon foodtech, with more than £665m invested into foodtech businesses in 2022 and 11 top universities offering food science courses.
  • Renewable energy: Transport for London is working to decarbonise the entire transport network by 2030. The city already has a Clean Growth Fund in place for early stage climate entrepreneurs.
  • Circular economy: The circular economy contributes £11bn to the city’s economy, a figure that is expected to grow to £24bn by 2030.
  • Proptech: London is home to 900 proptech companies, more than any other city in Europe, and ranks third in the world for investment in this sector with £1.4bn raised between 2017 and 2022.
  • Infrastructure: Sustainability is embedded into the city’s infrastructure projects. For example, the Future Home Standard is requiring all new homes built from 2025 to produce up to 80% less carbon emissions. Another example is public transport, all new London buses are zero emission, and 94 new trains which consume 20% less energy are expected to be rolled out in the London Underground.
